The cradle of an Italian Renaissance full of grace, Florence is one of the dream destinations for a weekend in Italy. Before going to admire Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Michelangelo’s David, the Duomo Church, or stroll along the Arno or on the Ponte Vecchio, here are the best hotels in Florence to make a home from home.
Milu is a capsule design hotel made up of two 15th-century palazzos with a sleek, contemporary aesthetic in an ideal spot on Via Tornabuoni. Our Superior Double room was quite intimate—small but breathable—with minimalist decor and colorful accents. The bathrooms are state-of-the-art. Rooms have an espresso machine and a minibar filled with beer, soft drinks, water, and snacks. The common room, which has a gorgeous view of the neighborhood, hosts a complimentary breakfast buffet. A favorite among fashion editors, this place has a cool factor that’s unmatched elsewhere in Florence.
Canto Degli Scali
Canto Degli Scali, a gorgeous early-Renaissance townhouse on a quiet side street near Piazza Della Signora, is charming, rustic, and personal. The design here is colorful, with contemporary pieces mingling well with traditional architecture, handmade four-poster beds, and exposed walls and beams. Rooms are duplexes, with a living area below. What really stood out, though, was the beautiful bathroom, with marble, slate, and a waterfall showerhead. You’ll want to move in—trust us.
Tornabuoni Suites Collection
Tornabuoni Suites are a series of “aparthotels”; in other words, renovated, stylish apartments on the upper floors of a historic palazzo. The design is clean and tech-savvy, with pleasantly muted hues and simple decorative accents. Suites have beautiful views. Thanks to a great location—smack in the center of the best shopping in Florence on posh Via Dei Tornabuoni, close to Piazza Della Repubblica—this is a great choice for business travelers and avid shoppers. It’s not, however, ideal for folks who love hotel amenities.
Brunelleschi Hotel
Brunelleschi, with its medieval stone building and gorgeous tower, is a place that drips with history. A location in the very center of Florence, around the corner from the Duomo, makes it a no-brainer. Rooms are chic and modern, with parquet floors, modernist cube headboards, and light colors with rich accent hues. Suites, meanwhile, are more lavish and baroque, with original architectural elements like exposed brick arches, marble, and resplendent brocades. There are great views of the dome; suites include your very own butler and porter, and there’s an onsite gym. Best of all, though, is the tiny archaeology museum in the basement.
Four Seasons Hotel Firenze
Situated just outside the city center, the lavish Four Seasons Firenze is housed in the Palazzo Della Gherardesca in four hectares (10 acres) of lush Tuscan gardens. Inside, a sunny loggia boasts original reliefs and soaring stucco arches. Each of the hotel’s 116 luxe guest rooms is individually decorated with tufted antique furniture and metallic brocades. For dining options, guests can pair fresh cocktails with pizza by the pool or enjoy dinner at the Michelin-starred Il Palagio restaurant. The full-service spa is the ideal way to fully unwind after a day of exploring all the great things to see and do in Florence.
Portrait Firenze
This classic hotel is in an impossible-to-beat central location, steps from Ponte Vecchio on the north bank of the Arno. Popular attractions such as the Uffizi Gallery and the Bargello Museum are just a short and scenic walk away through the winding Florentine streets. Inspired by the city’s haute couture fashion scene of the ’50s and ’60s, the interiors are decorated with retro-chic furnishings, designer textiles, and of-the-era monochrome prints. The hotel’s 37 suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows with river views, dark hardwood flooring, dove-grey walls, and a kitchenette. When it comes to dining, Caffe dell Oro offers traditional regional cuisine in a bright upscale setting. Highlights include the salmon carpaccio with dill and pumpkin ravioli.
Hotel Calimala
Inaugurated on October 1st, 2019 in Florence, Hotel Calimala has just taken up residence in Palazzo Degli Angeli, an Italian palace dating from the 19th century, a stone’s throw from the iconic Piazza Della Signoria and the Arno river. Imagined by interior designer Alex Meitlis (behind the famous Ottolenghi restaurants in London) the place has retained its period facade, moldings, and stone walls of yesteryear. Thanks to a titanic ceiling height, each of the 38 rooms is bathed in light. You will find colorful furniture, shimmering headboards, or bathrooms whose patterns and colors echo those of the Saint-Jean Baptiste located in piazza del Duomo a few meters away.
