Portrait Coffee

Kickstarter: Help Atlanta's Portrait Coffee Fund Their Cafe Dreams

Atlanta-based roastery Portrait Coffee opens its first permanent location in the West End soon. The new coffee shop, which could open by the end of 2020, takes up residence at the Lottie Watkins Building on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard. As a Black-owned coffee company, founders John Onwuchekwa, Marcus Hollinger, Khalid Smith, Shawndra Onwuchekwa, Aaron Fender, and Erin Fender want to bring better and more diverse representation to Atlanta’s specialty coffee scene. For now, people can find Portrait coffee at shops across Atlanta and can subscribe to its bean subscription service. Follow Portrait on Instagram for updates on the forthcoming shop.

Muchacho Coffee

Muchacho Coffee

The bright jewel box of a coffee shop was designed by Elizabeth Ingram, which means no detail was left unaccounted for. The aesthetic is retro California with its orange, blue, and gold motif, vintage furniture, and plenty of plants. Even the yellow and white espresso machine fits the theme. It’s small, so you may be hard-pressed to find a seat at rush times (which sometimes feels like all the time), but if you go on a sunny day you can grab a seat on the patio. Bonus: It’s right off the BeltLine.

Condesa Coffee

Condesa Coffee – Atlanta For The Young

Located just east of downtown, Condesa charms patrons with not only its lattes and cappuccinos but also its plethora of tea choices. Condesa prides itself on attentiveness to detail. Just take a look at the baristas, outfitted in stylish garb (complete with pattern bowties, crisp oxford dress shirts, and buttoned vests) and you’re sure to be impressed. The food menu is filled with small pastries and classic breakfast picks such as parfait and cinnamon oatmeal.

Rev Coffee

Rev Coffee

Smyrna isn’t known for much, but it does have Rev Coffee, which is an excellent local hangout spot. It’s especially good to know about if you find yourself at the Battery (just 10 minutes away) for a Braves game. The space was once an auto repair garage so it’s funky but without being harshly industrial thanks to plenty of natural light and comfy seating. The walls are lined with local art which changes frequently. If you’ve been meaning to add to your collection, this is a good starting point.
